National Day is just around the corner! The month of August commemorates how we have come together to support each other in good times and bad times. During this time of need, it is more important than ever that we look out for others.

In this new normal, there are a range of physical volunteering and virtual volunteering opportunities for you to choose from.

Here are some of the meaningful ways you can volunteer in Singapore.

1. Mentor and Befriend Foster Children

Gracehaven Fostering, part of the Salvation Army, provides a safe and warm home for foster children and youth. They connect foster families with children whose parents are unable to care for them.

The Salvation Army is running a programme where volunteers can give academic support by teaching, coaching and mentoring the child. They also have opportunities that allow volunteers to befriend the foster children, providing love, guidance and support.

Volunteer here and give a child the gift of learning and friendship.

2. Design Colouring Sheets

Due to the further tightening of measures and restrictions, charities have had to think of new innovative ways to connect with volunteers. This National Day, Be Kind SG is looking for volunteers to design Singaporean-themed colouring sheets for the communities at Moral Welfare Home and the THK Home for the Disabled located in Sembawang.

Did you know that colouring can promote healthy living for seniors? Research shows that it helps with reducing stress, enhancing concentration, problem-solving skills and helps to engage their creative minds. Your art will also keep our senior residents’ spirits up, and keep them busy and active with a fun activity to do.

Care Corner Singapore reaches out to various groups islandwide, helping families in need, at-risk youths, children with special needs and caring for seniors. They work to build tightly knitted communities through listening and providing counselling services that cater to the emotional, psychological and social well-being of the recipients.

Care Corner is looking for sports facilitators who are interested in engaging youth groups in sports activities like sepak takraw, soccer and dance. By doing so, you not only create camaraderie and teamwork, but also help youths at risk to tap into their potential and create a safe space for them to be themselves.

Volunteer here to reach youths through sports!

Located in Bedok, Filos Volunteer Centre aims to provide door-to-door meal deliveries to homebound seniors who are unable to prepare meals or go out to purchase meals and do not have anyone available to assist them in their daily needs.

As we reflect back on how far our nation has come, we should also take the time to give back with the glue that bonds us together – food. Food always brings our community together, regardless of race or religion. Not only will you be able to experience the joy of giving, but also see the adorable smiles you bring to their faces!

Volunteer here to bring warm, nutritious meals to those who need it the most!

6. Mobile Vaccination

SG Cares Volunteer Centre at Geylang is strengthening community outreach efforts in Singapore’s fight against Covid-19. The mobile vaccination stations aim to encourage seniors and lower income families to be vaccinated. Volunteers will be stationed at the centre to help with crowd management, engage the visitors during their observation and address simple queries.

As we all adjust to our new normal, we must ensure that nobody is left behind in our City of Good. By volunteering with the mobile vaccination team here, you can help to keep our community safe from the pandemic.
