Volunteering for the first time can be daunting, so it helps to do it with a friend. Meet Daryl and Dennis, who are classmates-turned-friends that volunteered for Habitat For Humanity in Singapore. Here, they share with us their experience, what they have learned and how they hope to continue volunteering in the future.

Introduce yourself.
We are Daryl and Dennis. Aged 16 this year, we are from Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School.

Share more about your friendship.
We met in Sec 1 through being in the same class. We had common interests such as playing computer games together, like Rainbow 6 and Destiny 2, so that brought us closer!

How did you get started with volunteering?
We both were offered the award for the National Youth Council (NYC) student programme, which aims to develop more youth leaders. The award included a community service component, so this encouraged us to explore volunteering activities.

Through searching online, we found out about Giving.sg and then the volunteering opportunity for Habitat For Humanity

What was your volunteering experience like?
We found it to be quite fun! We learned a lot of different skills through cleaning the house together. We saw how meaningful it could be to give your time, because we improved the living conditions for someone who really needed it.

It was very heartwarming when the occupant thanked us at the end.

Thanks for sharing about your first volunteering experience. Now that you’ve been through it once, would you like to volunteer again?
I don’t see why not! We are here to help others when we volunteer. Even though we were given this opportunity through academic purposes, we will continue to do it because we discovered various needs and how volunteering can help provide for those in need.

What kind of volunteering activities would you like to explore next?
Being able-bodied youth is extremely valuable. We would love to volunteer manual labour, such as cleaning and painting,so we look forward to volunteering for activities like this again!
