Recognising excellence in giving

The President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Awards (PVPA) is the pinnacle award and platform to recognise individuals, organisations and leaders that have achieved excellence in giving. These awards represent the highest honour for giving to the community and are conferred by the President of the Republic of Singapore. It is organised annually by the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), who is the steward of the City of Good vision, with support from the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY).

A City of Good is made up of people who care for one another, and take action to make society  better for all. President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Awards 2020 Special Edition – Our Finest Hour in the City of Good seeks to recognise individuals, organisations and leaders who are exceptional relational and multiplier givers* amid COVID-19 and have voluntarily devoted their time, talent, treasure and/or voice to create a positive impact in the community in the first half of 2020. Giving can be in the form of time (volunteerism), in-kind/cash/medical donations (philanthropy), and/or being advocates for causes or needs in society (sharing of voice).

Through the President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Awards 2020 Special Edition awards, we hope to honour the efforts by these astounding individuals, organisations and leaders for their contribution during these unprecedented times, and to inspire the wider public to be more other-centred in giving their best for others to build a City of Good.

*Relational giver is someone who gives wholeheartedly for the benefit of others and seeks to build an empathetic relationship with the beneficiary. A multiplier giver is an exemplary leader who galvanises others to come onboard his/her giving mission to create a positive impact in the community.

“I hope I can inspire the masses to adopt certain values, like not being judgmental towards others and loving unconditionally. This way, we don't need to go out to do good... because the good just comes naturally.”

“PSS is the story of how 8 ordinary Singaporeans came together to look out for their neighbours. Despite not knowing what was next, we not only managed to hit our initial goal to support rental communities in Boon Lay for the duration of circuit breaker, we received support from various groups to raise funds and further support rental communities around Singapore.

We will look out for someone we don’t know. Will you?”

“Our donated 3D printed face shields and ear savers were given to organisations and individuals, who went on to give the items away to people who they know are in need. This chain of looking out for one another is truly heartwarming! The bad times had brought out the good in people, and I hope this community spirit will continue on long after COVID.”

“Anyone and everyone has a part to play to ensure no one goes hungry in Singapore. It is our moral responsibility. While some may walk, some may crawl, but ALL will have a role to play in a United, Kind and Compassionate Singapore.”

“The most satisfactory scenario in the globe is to see a smile appearing on the faces of others and hearing their laughter despite the most difficult circumstances because one has helped them. It is the duty of all of us to contribute at least a little for the welfare of others within our capabilities. This will make our human society more beautiful and livable.

If you would like to do something better, you can do something altruistic from any position That's why my hope is to spread a little goodwill, a miniature care and a little love.”

“I worked during Singapore's Covid-19 circuit breaker as a food delivery rider to raise funds to support the Children's Cancer Foundation to enhance the lives of children and their families affected by cancer.

Charitable effort fitted well within the constraints of my lifestyle during the circuit breaker. I encourage others to find a cause that means something to them and to find a way to support it which fits well within their lifestyle.”

“The Ideology behind the things we have done (Giving out free food without questions asked), is to tell everyone and anyone, not to give up hope during the tough times. There will always be people loving and supporting you regardless”.

"When I started distributing free food to migrant workers, I used to receive numerous requests to help them with basic essentials like topping up phone balance or transferring money to their family. That's when I developed the BCS app where my friends started to come forward asking me if they could help contribute to the needy in any way.

Singapore has given me a lot. I will remain grateful for that. I am glad that I could contribute in small ways at a time of distress. This award will definitely motivate me greatly to continue helping the needy."

“No actions are too big or too small to bring a positive and meaningful impact in the lives around us. Do good, even when no one is watching.”

“As a socially responsible company, CapitaLand has been giving back to the communities where we operate globally. This gives us a sense of purpose, a soul to the company. When COVID-19 hit, we quickly rallied our partners, tenants, customers and staff to help those in need. I am encouraged by this strong community spirit to build a more caring and inclusive society.”

“By communicating in passionate action our aspirations to help the least, lost, and those who lag behind, we extend our hands inviting all people to work together with us towards improving lives."

“Q & M garnered our Resources, Team, and Skill and together we did our small part in fighting this COVID war Singapore style...One United people, regardless of race, religion (all races and religion), age( 18 to 60), company (Q & M and non Q & M) and profession (dentists, dental specialist, dental therapists, dental assistants, doctors, and lay persons).”

“Feel from the heart and dream big. Each and every effort magnifies & multiplies when the community comes together - 'Together we can' .....”

“The Food Bank Singapore started as a small project for my sister and I as we saw the gap in feeding those in need. We never envisioned our baby step to grow and create such impact and influence. We hope to inspire others who are still “thinking” of taking that first step. In the world today, no step is too small as collectively, we can take big strides towards Building a City Of Good.”

“Masks sewn with love was born, in response to Covid-19. In the face of great challenges, the human spirit shone through - Volunteers young and old pitched in to sew masks for the vulnerable. Because of their efforts, we are one step closer to being a City of Good. This award belongs to all the good-hearted people who chipped in to help.”

Minister of State Ms Sun Xueling,
MSWL Grassroots Adviser.

“We started Project Providence as individuals and never expected it to grow into a movement that has brought together people from all walks of life, to embrace the less fortunate in our midst.

Seeing our volunteers grow and make personal sacrifices in caring for our neighbors, it felt like a new spirit of resilience emerged despite these challenging times.

If we seek with all our hearts to do good, we shall find it. Project Providence hopes that we planted the seeds to usher in greater neighbourliness and volunteering among Singaporeans.”

“I sincerely believe that my journey and story demonstrate the true nature of Singapore as a gracious, giving and inclusive society. My greatest hope is that as a community, we put ourselves in each other’s shoes and conduct ourselves as we would like to be treated. That alone would take us a long way towards being not just a City of Good, but a City of Greatness. That is the vision of Singapore that inspires me to do better every day and I hope it inspires others too.”

“We all have different strengths, and we need one another to build back stronger.”

“We believe all acts of kindness create ripples of good to help make the world a kinder place."

“In a time where the world is getting more divided, we make a simple choice with every action to decide whether we want to see people as different from us, or as co-inhabitants of this earth that we share. There is only unity in strength, and our efforts with CMSC aim to show that we can only build a better future, together.”

“It has been amazing seeing how Singaporeans of all ages have moved to support our nation through these trying times. During this period, it has been a privilege to work alongside peers and colleagues across disciplines, from the public service to the SAF, in this common fight. Be it through giving our time and resources or by doing our part in daily life, we all can contribute towards helping Singapore emerge stronger together!”

"We are a small country hence just a simple act like remembering those who are down can make a huge ripple in society and rallying others to be an upstander by standing up and filling a need in our community. It is through such adversity like Covid-19 that we as Singaporeans must band together to show the strength and unity of our community because no virus shall be stronger than our nation's unity."

“Being a small ground-up meant that we could not work alone to navigate this crisis to tackle distribution of basic needs, comms to mental health issues. The pandemic brought the worst and best in all of us, but more importantly it brought people together from all walks of life to ensure no one is left behind. This includes the invisible heroes from our migrant communities who stepped up to respond to their fellow brothers and sisters in need. Everyone has agency and a part to play in the solution, and I hope positive change will transcend this crisis!”

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you. If we want others to love us you first love them.

Everybody and anybody can be a builder of the ‘City of Good’. Doing good is in our nature and simple. Your little action of good can cause ripples of Good. “
