Tackling cancer via an Oxbridge classic

To biotech firm Tessa Therapeutics, it’s a valuable opportunity to be able to support cancer patients and their families by participating in Row for Hope, a fundraising and public education event led by Oxbridge Singapore.

The Oxbridge rivalry is one steeped in history and tradition. One of the chapters of this storied rivalry is the varsity race – a set of rowing races on the River Thames between the Oxford University and the Cambridge University Boat Clubs in London – that was first held in 1829 but has been an annual fixture since 1856.

Cambridge graduate associate professor Toh Han Chong, deputy director and senior consultant at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), says that the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Singapore (Oxbridge Singapore) revived the annual Singapore boat races two years ago along Marina Bay, after having held only one in 1997 along Kallang River.

He adds that similar to the Oxbridge boat races in England, which support cancer research fundraising, “our mission for Row for Hope is to raise awareness and to participate in fundraising to aid cancer patients in financial need”.

The event on March 26 marked the second year that NCCS has collaborated with Oxbridge Singapore for Row for Hope. This year, they found a strategic partner in Tessa Therapeutics.

For Mr Andrew Khoo, Tessa’s chief executive officer and co-founder, the opportunity to be a part of Row for Hope is a valuable one. . .
