1 February 2019, Singapore – How can we do more for the social issues and communities we care about, without waiting for the government and institutions to do it for us?

In partnership with National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) Company of Good initiative and A Good Space, A Good Pitch returns for the second edition tomorrow, 2 February 2019 at NVPC. Each year, A Good Pitch give away $1,000 grants to 5 changemakers to kickstart innovative projects for the social issues and communities they care.

NVPC’s Deputy Director, Corporate Giving, Quek Shiyun said, “We are happy to catalyze this platform together with A Good Space for the first time. A Good Pitch presents a unique opportunity for companies to go beyond traditional giving models of donations and one-off volunteering by collaborating with active citizen changemakers. In the long run, we hope to see companies implementing A Good Pitch in their workplaces, to inspire their staff to do more for the social issues they care about, with the support of their company.”

40 changemakers will pitch innovative projects ranging from combating social inequality, sexual assault, and supporting marine biodiversity, couples facing infertility, children and youth, seniors, and more.

Highlights of the projects:

  • 3417 BikeFIX – changemaker Malcolm Chen from Merdeka Generation uses bike repairs as a way to engage differently-abled, seniors, vulnerable groups. It aims to use hands-on bike repair workshops to engage and build self-esteem in the differently-abled, seniors and youth-at-risk.
  • Bonde Cise – interesting format using Malay Dance to connect older malay women not keen in fitness and at risk of chronic illness
  • Doctors and Answers – app that allows subscribers to access live-chat doctors at very low rates
  • Through Your Eyes – photo exhibition allowing person to experience a day in the life of a person from lower income background

73 year-old founder Malcolm Chen is the oldest changemaker this time round and hopes to continue to create positive change well into his golden years. “My late mother taught me that giving is my moral responsibility as a citizen, so I am doing what I can,” said Mr Chen, when asked about his motivations for joining A Good Pitch.

A Good Space – a community of changemakers championing diverse social issues

“We wanted to create space for ordinary citizens to come forward to create positive change,” said Nominated Member of Parliament, Anthea Ong, founding curator of A Good Space.

At the showcase, members of the public can meet the passionate changemakers and hear their stories; explore volunteer opportunities and refreshing ways to give back; find collaboration opportunities for social initiatives; and learn how changemakers pitch and win the grants.

The inaugural edition last year saw 43 changemakers from all walks of life come forward with their ideas for Singapore, from a group of 16 year-old students to a pair of 77 year-old grandfathers. Amongst the five winning teams were Lynn Chia, Ho Xin Er, Nowell Ng and Hilary Tan, a group of final year undergraduates from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at the Nanyang Technological University.

A survivor of sexual assault, Ms Chia started The Standby Collective, an online campaign to educate the public on how to respond to cases of sexual harassment and assault on public transportation.

“Beyond the grant, we also got access to a community of like-minded changemakers, mentorship and resources that helped us to bring our project to life,” said Ms Chia, last year winner.

On 2 February 2019, 40 changemakers will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges comprising of leaders from the business, civil society and non-profit sectors. Alongside the pitch will also be an exhibition where they get to showcase their ideas to members of the public, volunteers, funders, companies and collaborators.
