As a volunteer graphic designer, Cleo has been hard at work on various CCF projects such as the designing of informational booklets for teachers and parents, even the illustration and layout of a children’s book!

“Each project has been fun and challenging in their own unique way. The CCF staff who I’ve worked with have been really friendly, encouraging, and accommodating to my schedule; especially when timelines have to be kept flexible due to my personal commitments. Thank you CCF for all the amazing work that you do. Happy International Volunteer Day to my fellow volunteers!"

In celebration of International Volunteer Day on 5 December 2021, we organised a physical and virtual appreciation event for volunteers with the SG Cares Volunteer Centre @ Yishun!

To thank them for all that they have done for the community and beneficiaries of Yishun town this year, we arranged for a physical* pottery workshop at thepotters1881, and a virtual card-making session via Zoom, facilitated by the chambermusicartssg! We challenged the volunteers to create and design a piece of art that best signified what volunteerism meant to them. 😉

Throughout the session, we were heartened to see the volunteers from all walks of life and ages come together to connect, and share their experiences and personal stories with one another, notwithstanding their volunteering journey.

While it may not compare to the acts of service that they have given to the community, we hope the volunteers enjoyed and found the session fulfilling. Head over to our Facebook Page to view more photos of the Volunteer Appreciation Day! #linkinbio👆

Shout-out to The Potters 1881 and Chamber Music and Arts Singapore for co-organising this event with us, and for sharing the importance of appreciating our unsung heroes! 🙌

*Safe management measures were in place and adhered to throughout the pottery workshop.

Chloe is a young volunteer who began her journey with CCF in 2020. She saw an opportunity to use her bilingualism in English and Mandarin to host CCF events.

“I have been involved in amazing projects organised by a team of passionate individuals, and helped with the coordination of the activities to ensure that the children enjoy themselves thoroughly throughout the programme. Being able to put a smile on the children’s faces and letting them know that they matter is important to me. I am thankful to be a volunteer with CCF.”

It is often hard to understand the struggles of post-cancer survivors. Having personally seen the benefits that CCF’s programmes have brought to its beneficiaries, Wei Yang decided that he wanted to find a way to give back.

"As a volunteer tutor, I supported a CCF beneficiary with supplementary educational resources and guidance that reinforced what was learnt in school. The most memorable interaction I had was when my tutee had a light-bulb moment, finally understanding a difficult concept. In such instances, I feel a great sense of satisfaction to know that I helped her overcome a major hurdle she faced at school."

Seniors at Pacific Activity Centre (PAC) @ Yishun Greenwalk took part in a Digital Literacy Workshop conducted by our very own volunteer, Mr Goh!

Mr Goh found an opportunity with the SG Cares VC @ Yishun online and reached out to initiate a skills-based engagement project for beneficiaries in Yishun town. 🏡

As a freelance educator specialising in technology, Mr Goh was keen to share his skills in this area, and after being referred to PAC and learning more about the needs of their senior beneficiaries, he planned and conducted a physical digital literacy workshop which covered the know-hows and ways of using key mobile applications on their smartphones. 📱

His workshop was well-received and he personally found enjoyment conducting the session: "It's been a great volunteering experience! I was very encouraged by the seniors who are so keen to acquire digital skills although they are rather fearful of technology."

Reach out to us to initiate skills-based projects for Yishun town or explore volunteering opportunities on our or the SG Cares App! #linkinbio👆

In conjunction with SG Cares giving week and International Volunteering Day on 5 December, Heartware Network organised the Appreciation through Service 2021 event for volunteers to serve the children and special needs individuals from benefiting organisations on the topic of Building Resilience through Expressing Gratitude.

Between 13 November – 3 December, 165 youths from 16 Secondary schools and Junior Colleges along with 20 volunteers from JPMorgan engaged 206 beneficiaries through a 1.5-hour sharing on showing appreciation and encouragement to others. After the sharing, the volunteers and beneficiaries worked together to create a digital card with words of appreciation and encouragement to the people around them. These cards were then compiled as a representation of building Community Resilience beyond COVID-19.

We would like to thank Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore, Care Community Services Society, Canossaville Children and Community Services, Down Syndrome Association, Metta Welfare Association, Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), New Life Community Services and Yong-en Care Centre for providing our youths the opportunities to serve their beneficiaries and inspire them to serve towards Community Resilience beyond COVID-19!

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy International Volunteering Day! 🎉

For many adults, visiting the dentist is an intimidating experience. What more for children with special needs? Enter Dr. Tengku Sinannaga, an orthodontist who has been a trusty presence at Margaret Drive School for 20 years. While Dr. Tengku’s initial motivation for volunteering was to gain experience in treating children with special needs, whom many dentists lack exposure to, this has since changed.

“Along the way, I realised that I had the mission to enable these children to visit any dentist, not just specially-trained dentists,” he explains.

However, gaining students’ trust is never easy. Faced with a room of scary-looking instruments and strangers without understanding what is happening, some of them may communicate their anxiety and discomfort through physical means, like struggling, especially if they are unable to verbalise their apprehension. Yet, Dr. Tengku looks upon these “battle scars” with gratitude.

“The scratches, the bites - all these things give me a very valuable lesson and they are something that I am very thankful for. Because if you don't get these, you will not realise that the patient is telling you: ‘I'm scared.’”

They were a lesson for him to approach the treatment experience differently and ensure that students are able to understand the process and calm down. Now, many of the students enter his clinic composedly, confidently sit down for treatment, and some even give him a thank you hug when they leave - to his delight.

Dr. Tengku’s volunteering journey continues, towards his goal of enabling our students to visit any healthcare setting with confidence after they graduate!

“The best volunteering is when you are able to share your passion for a good cause. Take what you like to do and make it a volunteering opportunity!” ✨

These are the wise words from Madhuri Ajay Wagle, who has been on the volunteering journey with DSA for the past seven years. She has always had an interest in the arts, and when a friend who was running the art program at DSA needed volunteers, she felt it was the perfect opportunity to use her passion for a good cause.

“I moved to Singapore 11 years ago and wanted to meet people while giving back to others in some way. One thing led to another, and volunteering became a meaningful part of my life. I am most motivated to continue simply by seeing the joy we can bring to the beneficiaries who we serve.”

Madhuri conducted art classes for young adults as part of the Adult Education Programme (AEP), assisting the beneficiaries to create artworks which are then auctioned to raise funds. “One of my fondest memories is the ‘Mystique’ annual gala dinner in 2015 when DSA volunteers guided the beneficiaries to create an artwork live on stage in front of an audience. The audience highly appreciated the painting, and it was auctioned off twice in the same night!”

Besides the quote in the photo, another favourite quote of hers is, “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time, they just have the heart”.

And for Madhuri, DSA is thankful for her gracious heart that is full of love for our beneficiaries. Happy #InternationalVolunteerDay! ❤️

🎉 Happy International Volunteer Day! 🎉

Truly, volunteerism is love in motion, an intangible and humbling experience that we hope to share and uplift our community efforts together as one.

We would like to give a big shout-out to all our volunteers - the unsung heroes behind the scenes - for your dedication, acts of service, and love that you pour out in all forms of size and lengths, as you embark and go on this volunteering journey with us, and bear witness to another person’s development and transformation through our community partners' programmes. 🙆

Denise Foo, Volunteer Manager of SG Cares Volunteer Centre @ Yishun, operated by campusimpactsg, shares her best hope on this special occasion:

“My best hope is for us to stay connected to the ground, build capabilities, and leave positive impacts in the community no matter how big or small, while keeping in mind on the ONE common goal of serving with our hearts; and recognising what difference you want to make to our society because every one of us matters.”

“I leave you with a quote by American poet, Edward Everett Hale: Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is a process; working together is success."

Thank you volunteers for playing your part to make Yishun vibrant, and Singapore a more caring and inclusive home for all! 🏠❤️

Anna first got to know about Aidha in 2012 from a staff member and felt like she wanted to do more so she signed up for Volunteer Orientation to be a mentor. She was moved by the story of an Aidha alumna and how Aidha's programmes have transformed her life. Anna explains: "I saw how education can make such a big impact on someone’s life."

She is now a mentor for Communication and Confidence in Module 1 and her favourite thing about mentoring is getting to know her students and seeing their incredible growth throughout the course, especially when giving out speeches during class. "It’s so amazing to witness the change and the growth in all of them!"

"The more I teach, the more I learn," Anna shares with us how mentoring at Aidha has also grown her passion for teaching. The unique Aidha Experience is something she loves as well, witnessing how her students who started out as strangers came together in their common goals for a better future and became each other's support system.

Like our dedicated volunteers, you too can give the gift of growth by donating to our Gift of Education campaign here,

Neither physical distance nor limitations deter the will of well-meaning youths from giving back to the community through Singapore Cancer Society (SCS). When SCS called for volunteers to contribute feature articles, Nathaniel Chin was the first to come forward.

Nathaniel started volunteering with SCS last November while serving his National Service. Believing that many hands make light work, he quickly roped in three of his friends who had the expertise and willingness to contribute.

Volunteering amid a pandemic comes with many challenges, which they met head on by taking on tasks they could work on remotely. Together, the four friends helped with translation, video editing, and content writing, putting together feature stories on cancer survivors.

Doing everything remotely—including interviewing fellow volunteers and cancer survivors—did not in any way diminish the sense of meaning and satisfaction they derived from their duties.

“Every session feels like a nice catchup with your friend” 🥰

Zhang Xinyuan, a student volunteer from SMU Project Bloom, had an enjoyable experience working with persons with Down syndrome prior to joining DSA. What motivated her to start volunteering was to give back to society and help those in need.

“I feel I have always been taking what society gives me, in terms of help and all, but did not give back to society. Moreover, what keeps me going will be the smiles I see as I am volunteering with children and young adults. Seeing them enjoying the sessions makes my day too.”

Through the monthly virtual Project Bloom sessions, one fond memory she had was sharing her love for Toy Story with her beneficiary.

“I am also a big fan of toy story and thus we both showed off our collection of toys HAHAH! It’s fun and cute to see him sharing his favourites despite it being only the first session.”

As her favourite quote goes, “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.”

Similarly, Xinyuan’s advice to anyone who is interested in volunteering is, “Take a step forward and try out volunteering and continue to volunteer on a regular basis. Our time spent with them will really cheer them up and make them happy, and befriend them! You really connect with them and every session feels like a nice catchup with your friend.”

Thank you Xinyuan, for gifting your time and bringing smiles to our members! Happy #InternationalVolunteerDay! ❤️
